And here's a little behind the scenes story for you: Calling Myself Home: Living Simply, Following Your Heart, and What Happens When You Jump began as a chronicle of experiences and reflections written out of my joy and amazement at my good fortune of being brought to the village and mountains where I (still) reside. I wrote to ground, remember and share what I was experiencing; the original writings sent as letters to my closest circle of friends and family. After several years, I shared the writings through a blog, called, “What Happens When You Jump.” One day, the blog disappeared. Simply vanished into the ethers. The loss felt like a punch to the heart, awakening in me the certainty that my stories and reflections held value and messages for the world and must not be lost. I started culling the prolific journal entries I had written during the first years in the village, when I was on “retreat” (i.e. completely free to do what I wanted when I wanted, self-liberated from obligations, even to know what day it was). I envisioned an artistic coffee table book of illuminated gems culled from my writings, and photographs. Then my dad died and my mom was elderly, alone, and failing. I felt drawn to go be with her in southern California for some months, which I did. My mom (and my dad in later years) a writer herself, took great interest in my writings, and encouraged me to take advantage of the dynamic writing community in town. I joined the writer’s guild and a critique group and it is there, that my story grew its wings and format: the book would contain whole stories and reflections, not merely quotes! Back in Latin America, I received a surprise call from an editor/agent friend, wanting to help me get the book out to the world. He was insistent and clear that my story, how I had left “everything” and gone to Mexico, completely changing my life, was needed and would be well received by many. We began working together and with his sharp editing guidance, the book took shape and was completed. As the subtitle implies, the book addresses living simply, following your heart and yes, what happens when you jump. It can be read easily at any of these levels, and as a teaching. At the deepest level, though, the book deliveries a message of hope and a model of sustainability that I have gleaned by living for the past 13 years in an indigenous village where the traditions are alive. |
I continue to be infinitely grateful that I, a suburban girl who never fit in to my family
or society–after so much suffering–was so blessed as to eventually live in a place and way that fits with my heart’s knowing. A place where at times I have truly felt I was living in ancient times, when the people lived consciously, ceremoniously, in relationship with the beings residing in their midst. |
It satisfies, me. It’s not for everyone. Regardless, I believe it is important that you know. That through my stories and reflections you can get a glimpse. That the book touches something deep, perhaps slumbering, perhaps unquiet, but surely primordial – about how to live.
And so, I offer you, my lovely, Calling Myself Home. This is a story that will challenge you to: • Embolden yourself to get in alignment with what would be the most harmonious, wellness-producing lifestyle for you and do it. You do have choice and taking responsibility for that is a gift to yourself and the world. • Ignite hope that no matter your past and challenges, listening to your heart and following your dreams is possible, and can have positive, unimagined results. • Grasp and harness in your own life the relevance and need for a model of sustainability in the world today, as modeled by the ancient living traditions where I live, and illustrated through my narrative and contemplations. Thank you so so much for your support, it means the world to me. |
