I had decided to take the gems I’ve received through journaling over the last four plus decades, and use them to benefit other seekers of a truly fulfilling life. What sprouted up was an Intentional Living journaling (+ creative projects + community building support calls + much more) course all about Happiness. Not theoretical happiness. Experiential happiness. Why Happiness? I chose the topic “Happiness” because it seemed a cheerful way to begin the process of delving into who we are and what we need to actually live our ideal life. Why is that so difficult to do, in the first place? Wouldn’t it seem that happiness is so easy and obvious to recognize, follow and live? It wasn’t that way for me. I thought I was so independent in my thinking. I stood on the apparently solid ground of “I don’t fit in. I’m not like everyone else. I’m different.” In part, that stance served to separate me from what I saw in my family and society that didn’t make sense to me, that seemed contrary to love and harmonious living – that made me specifically unhappy. My separation from and rejection of the “them” was also defiance. It was my way of saying “no,” to what I didn’t want my life to be. Why “No” is easier than “Yes” It’s much harder to say “Yes,” to what one does want, though, haven’t you found? It is much easier to complain and be victim and not take responsibility. Easy in a way, but harder in the long run for the detriment it causes: an unhappy, unfulfilled life of self-burying and lies – even if not overt. How many people live that way? Brainwashed (this is also called “educated”,) to follow rules made by others, succumbing to the belief that you can’t really choose your life due to too many “have to’s” and “shoulds.” Not to mention the entire structure of our current society breathing down your neck lest you dare wake up from the status-quo “truth” and step onto another path. Sounds like a scary science fiction story, doesn’t it? So let’s not stay there. The Discovery of Real Happiness for the First Time When I followed my calling, made clear to me by visions and a clear sense in my heart of being chosen and literally pulled to a specific place (for a specific life that I had no inkling of,) I discovered for the first time, real happiness. Living for three years doing exactly what I wanted to do gave me a visceral experience that contrasted starkly with the way I’d been living. I say this despite having left a fabulous house, job and community. Even with the apparently “perfect” life I’d had, the resultant patterns and energy expenditures were unnatural and battled connection with my ideal rhythms, actions and desires. Ultimately this unbalanced way of living showed its unsustainability through illness. Living quietly and freely in the rural mountain village in Mexico I was brought to, showed me how it couldbe. Living that way is perhaps not long-term sustainable either, for lack of practicality at the very least, but it taught me unequivocally the importance and value of being happy. Happiness is a Choice I am a philosophical person. During those three years especially, I was looking at and investigating the mind. I questioned decision making often: On what basis do I make them? Do I make choices based on what my mind says? What I hear or read? What others are doing? What’s pragmatic? Then I got to a deeply personal level: How do I know what’s good for me or not? What are my clues and guides? Which emotional and mental experiences do I trust? I realized that I am free to decide my actions. I can choose from unhappiness. Likewise, I can choose from and for happiness. “Since I have choice, and happiness feels good, and since I appear to have free will, why not have as my basis for making decisions, what makes me happy?” I asked myself. “It’s as good as anything and it feels better, so why not?” Thus began my consciously choosing to trust Happiness. It’s my guide and intention. Life’s too short to choose what I know makes me feel unhappy. There’s enough of that in life, anyhow, don’t you agree? Which brings me to why I’m offering my “5 Ways to Be Happy” course. Happiness is not trite, it’s serious business!
